I help ambitious, soul-seeking individuals break free from societal blueprints and unfulfilling careers, take a meaningful pause, and intentionally design a future deeply aligned with their values, dreams, and authentic selves.
You’ve stepped back into BAU. And wow, what a culture shock you’ve had on return from sabbatical leave.
So many of us go wrong post a sabbatical. We ignore the importance of the transition back into business as usual. We’ve experienced the blissful hiatus that is the serene embrace of a break in our career and return to work with an aggressive thud. A shock that leaves our time off as a distant memory. The lessons learned, the clarity gained, and the renewed sense of purpose fading into the background, overshadowed by the relentless demands of work.
The risk is not just in losing the sabbatical glow but in missing out on the opportunity for a more fulfilling and intentional post-sabbatical professional journey. The question we often grapple with is not just how to return to work but more crucially how to sustain the rejuvenating effects of the sabbatical amidst the daily grind.
Your sabbatical serves as a vital reset button, offering an opportunity of sacred time for self-discovery, growth and a recalibration of life priorities. However, without intentional efforts to integrate the profound experiences and teachings gained during your sabbatical these transformative moments can swiftly slip away leaving the experience feeling like a distant memory.
The sabbatical experience can dissipate within a matter of weeks, leaving a feeling of disconnection, stressed and a yearning for the peace you momentarily found. Instead of a cure to the root cause of the problem your sabbatical becomes a bandaid.
What if there was a way to sustain the experience, infuse all the lessons learnt into your daily routine and return from sabbatical leave with an exquisite balance and unwavering, sustainable vitality?
Enter sabbatical integration techniques.
This is where the magic happens. This is where the ‘why’ for you taking the time off in the first place meets a more balanced ‘future you’. Integration techniques are a crucial step in preserving the essence of your sabbatical. Incorporating thoughtful rituals and practices help to blend your sabbatical experience with the demands of your professional life. It’s not merely about returning to work but about ensuring that the wisdom gained during your sacred period of time off remains a guiding light on your ongoing journey.
Integration techniques are often neglected upon returning from a sabbatical for two reasons. Firstly, people don’t know what they don’t know and secondly the overwhelming nature of the re-entry process means the initial enthusiasm of being back at work coupled with the urgency to catch up on missed tasks can overshadow the need for thoughtful integration.
Without intentional efforts to weave the lessons and insights from the sabbatical into the fabric of daily life, you’ll risk falling back into old patterns and diminish the potential for sustained personal growth. The vibrant, transformative energy cultivated during the sabbatical will wane. The promise of a harmonious work-life balance will slip through your fingers.
These five integration techniques are crafted to facilitate a seamless re-entry into the professional domain. These will allow you to seamlessly blend the positive energy from your time off into your work.
Before immersing yourself in a whirlwind of professional demands I invite you to take a collective pause for reflection. Acknowledge the experiences and lessons from your time away. Savour the nuances that may have the potential to fade in the hustle of daily life.
Setting yourself realistic and progressive goals becomes a pivotal part of this process. Define your objectives and be sure to celebrate the small victories along the way. Personally I find that establishing a reward system works. Knowing precisely how you’ll treat yourself upon reaching milestones adds an extra layer of motivation and intentionality to your path.
On return from my third sabbatical leave my husband and I took time to define what we wanted life to look and feel like once back operating in business as usual. We scheduled review times to ensure that we were living and breathing the new balanced life we wanted to create.
Integration isn’t a one-time event; it’s an ongoing process, and incorporating transition rituals into your daily routine serves as a powerful catalyst. These rituals can range from brief, daily activities to more sporadic, longer practices.
Consider integrating daily rituals such as journaling, free writing, breath-work, or intention setting. Starting your day with a mindful ritual not only aids in transitioning smoothly into work mode but also instills a sense of purpose and mindfulness.
On a broader scale I invite you to infuse occasional but profound rituals into your routine. Embrace activities like medicine walks or vision boarding which act as potent anchors. Such rituals remind you of the intentions through both your professional and personal journey.
On return from my sabbatical I used “Joy days” and continue to lace these through my life today. On such days I deliberately only engage in activities that bring me unbridled happiness. I turn off technology, practice being totally present and celebrate the life I have created.
Physical exercise is touted for its myriad benefits, but how often do we prioritise going to the happiness gym? Mo Gawdat’s analogy of happiness as fitness is both enlightening and actionable. I recommend scheduling dedicated time. Perhaps an hour, four or five times a week to indulge in activities that genuinely make you happy.
“Happiness is literally like fitness,” says Gawdat. “Make it your priority and go to the happiness gym.” This could encompass reading a book, listening to a podcast, spending quality time with loved ones, or engaging in activities that light up your soul. Treat happiness with the same commitment as you would your physical health, and witness the transformative impact on your professional resilience.
In the pursuit of balance, strategic planning becomes a valuable ally. Embrace the concept of transition time blocks, where you visually map out your week. Select a day that resonates with you. Perhaps the freshness of Monday or the reflective nature of Friday, dedicate this time to meticulous planning.
During these sessions colour code essential components of your life in your calendar. Assign distinctive hues to friends, family, exercise, self-development, and work. This visual representation serves as a compass, allowing you to recalibrate and reprioritise as needed. You’ll soon see if a colour is missing or the balance seems skewed. This session offers the opportunity to reallocate your resources and mental energy, ensuring equilibrium.
I’ve been doing this for years. The magic of being able to tweak your time to maintain balance is never lost on me. I’ve also found that communication is key to living a peaceful life. Once I’ve planned my week I then communicate it to those who matter which helps manage expectations and avoid conflict.
Life’s demands can be overwhelming, and the path to maintaining balance often feels like an intricate maze. On your return from sabbatical leave, the support of an accountability partner becomes indispensable. Choose someone you trust, someone who will hold you accountable for the promises you make to yourself.
Life’s journey is better shared. Having a reliable accountability partner can make the difference between navigating challenges with resilience or succumbing to the pressures of imbalance. Reach out if you need one, I’m happy to support where I can.
By consciously weaving these five transformative techniques into the fabric of your daily life post sabbatical, you’ll discover that maintaining balance becomes an instinctive part of your routine. Transitioning from a career break or sabbatical isn’t merely about returning to work. It’s an opportunity to craft a harmonious and fulfilling life ahead and step into the best version of ‘future you’.
