I help ambitious, soul-seeking individuals break free from societal blueprints and unfulfilling careers, take a meaningful pause, and intentionally design a future deeply aligned with their values, dreams, and authentic selves.
If you’re feeling stuck in your job and unsure what comes next, you’re not alone. Many mid-career professionals I work with reach a point where they crave something different but aren’t ready to risk it all. That’s where career prototyping for a career change comes in. A practical, low-pressure way to test new ideas, explore what truly fits, and design a career that feels right before you commit. Many people treat a mid-career career change like a wedding proposal, all in, forever, no take-backs.
But here’s the truth: you don’t have to marry your next career idea. You can date it first.
It certainly worked for me and I’ll admit, I had a lot of dates!
That’s what career prototyping is all about: testing and exploring new career ideas in small, low-risk ways before committing fully. It’s the single best way to explore a career change or career pivot without quitting your job or draining your savings.
During my career break, I learned, through a few “failed” experiments that turned out to be anything but failures that sometimes failure is just feedback in disguise. Career prototyping for change set me up se well that I want to share my experiences with you.
Before I took my career break, I was convinced I’d found my next path. Between leaving my old role and becoming a Career Transition and Career Break Coach, I thought I’d found it three separate times.
I built a website (hated it), spent hours tweaking fonts and plugins (didn’t love it), and started publishing posts from every trip. I was sure I’d cracked the code to combining my love of travel and storytelling, until I realised the business of blogging drained the joy from the act of traveling.
Still, that experiment taught me something vital: I wanted freedom and creativity, but not at the cost of constant hustle and endless tech tinkering.
Next up, I trained as a travel coach. I loved the idea of helping others avoid burnout, understand why they wanted to travel, and make the most of their experiences.
Sounded great, until I realised I couldn’t clearly explain what a “Travel Coach” actually meant, how I could add value, or what my competitive advantage was.
If you can’t sell it, it’s not a business.
That experiment showed me I craved depth and challenge, that I thrive when blending empathy with analytical thinking and that I needed to believe deeply in what I was offering.
Then came my travel writing experiment. I got drawn in by the glamorous online persona of a writing coach (who I hired) but soon hated the deadline-driven grind, the constant pitching to editors, and the sense that I had to write about travel even when I didn’t feel inspired.
Worse, I started to fall out of love with travel itself (catastrophic).
Lesson learned: I wanted to travel for fun, connection, and experience, not for work. I wanted travel to stay my passion, not become my paycheck.
Career prototyping is the art of testing new career paths before committing to one. Instead of quitting your job and jumping headfirst into the unknown, you:
Think of it as career dating, you’re figuring out what fits before you “say yes.” Would you marry at first sight?!
If you’ve ever thought, “I need a career change but don’t know what to do,” you’re not alone.
Prototyping gives you:
It’s a realistic, low-pressure way to move from stuck and overwhelmed to curious and empowered and it’s how so many of my clients start finding direction again.
You don’t need to quit your job to start experimenting. Try this:
Each step helps you design a career transition that fits who you are now, not who you were ten years ago.
If you’re feeling stuck and unsure what to do next, career prototyping could be your way forward.
It’s how you move from “I need a new career” to “I know exactly what fits.”
